Student assistant - HPLC Method Development

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is one of the standard techniques for separating and measuring sugars. We are building a predictive model for our HPLC sugar separation: given three operating conditions - the solvent composition, column temperature and the mobile-phase flow rate - the model will predict how each sugar behaves, that is, how long it takes to travel through the columns (its retention time) and how broad its peak is. Once the model is built and validated, it will let us predict and optimise separations on a computer instead of by trial and error at the bench.

 

A model is only as good as the measurements behind it. To build ours we need a structured, carefully run set of experiments on the instrument, and that is the heart of this internship. We are looking for a methodical, reliable person to generate that dataset.

 

 

Your tasks

As our research intern you will run the experimental campaign that produces the model's data. You will:

  • Prepare the sugar standards and the mobile phase to a consistent, documented recipe.
  • Run a planned grid of separations across a range of column temperatures and flow rates (a structured campaign on the order of a few dozen runs, including repeats for quality control).
  • Keep clear, well-organised records so the data can be modelled afterwards.

 

You will not be expected to build the model yourself - your contribution is the high-quality experimental dataset the model depends on. Clear thinking and a steady, careful hand matter far more here than prior experience.

 

Your profile

  • Working towards a degree in chemistry, biochemistry, polymer chemistry or a related field.
  • No HPLC experience required - full hands-on training is provided.
  • Methodical and detail-oriented, with good record-keeping habits.
  • Reliable and able to commit consistently to the schedule — running a planned campaign means following the protocol and turning up dependably.
  • Comfortable with basic laboratory arithmetic (dilutions, concentrations, unit conversions).
