The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) of the Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon is seeking a project scientist from one or more of the following backgrounds:
i) Environmental Data Science that combines environmental science knowledge with programming, statistics, and data analysis skills;
ii) Earth System Data Science or similar interdisciplinary fields with earth system sciences combined with data science and remote sensing;
iii) Climate Science or Climatology with strong quantitative/computational skills for coastal climate change analysis and climate adaptation;
iv) Environmental Science or Geography with emphasis on geospatial analysis, GIS, and coastal/marine systems to bridge information technology with coastal challenges; or,
v) Data Science or Computer Science with environmental applications.
GERICS develops science-based prototype products and services in support to government, administration and business in their efforts to adapt to climate change. It builds up a national and international network structure in order to integrate existing competences and knowledge, and to link various actors within the complex area of climate change.
The candidate would develop coastal climate services and would be responsible for data analysis and transformation and the conversion of science products for application at the local administrative and community level in the coastal environment in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) and beyond. The position is affiliated with the Interreg BSR projects Baltic Planet and RegenT. The context of coastal climate change GERICS is developing, testing and supporting the implementation of climate services to support the Policy Areas Tourism and Planning of the BSR.
The candidate should start as soon as possible. In principle, the full time position (39 h/week) is also sharable and limited to 24 months. GERICS is located in the Chilehaus in Hamburg, Germany.

Your tasks
- sourcing and accessing climate change data relevant to managers in the policy areas mentioned above
- query, manipulation and use of climate change indices (C3S, CORDEX, etc.), and their interpretation and application in the target policy areas and with a diverse user-base
- scientific data analysis with regard to socially relevant issues on coastal climate change, climate adaptation and tourism and planning
- design and implementation of digital, BSR-specific information tools on coastal climate change and climate adaptation in the relevant policy areas mentioned above
- transdisciplinary engagement with societal actors, including scientists, local administration, coastal communities, and other decision-makers
- apply skills in data science, advanced AI interface development and machine learning to apply climate change and other relevant data to real-world problems
- exchange and coordination with project partners
Your profile
- scientist preferably with a completed PhD degree in environmental, climate, earth sciences or similar
- experience with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise solutions
- expertise in coastal research and climate change
- independence and ability to work in a team
- very good written and spoken English skills are required, German language skills will be an advantage
- have a good understanding of societal actor engagement
- an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary mindset is essential
- a valid and existing work permit for the EU
