The Coastal and Climate Office for Northern Germany at the Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling / Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon is seeking a Data Scientist for geoscientific data analysis and web tool development, starting as soon as possible, for a limited period until 30. November 2027. This full-time position (39 hours/week) is also open for part-time work.
The position is affiliated with the BMBF project WAKOS – Water on the Coasts of East Frisia and the sustainMare research mission of the German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM). The Coastal and Climate Office is developing suitable web tools for both projects, based on extensive geoscientific data analysis.
Your task will include the development of interactive web tools (examples of existing web tools can be found at www.kuesten-klimabuero.de). These formats are intended to provide easy access to current coastal climate information for non-specialist users. This will require extensive scientific data analyses with regard to socially relevant issues. Furthermore, large amounts of data from different disciplinary contexts must be compiled and linked in a meaningful and needs-based manner.

Your tasks
- scientific data analysis with regard to socially relevant issues on coastal climate change, climate adaptation and offshore energy
- design and implementation of digital, regional-specific web tools on coastal climate change, climate adaptation, and climate protection
- further development and maintenance of the coastal climate information platform as a digital infrastructure for service offerings from WAKOS project partners
- evaluation of existing technical solutions with regard to specific needs
- exchange and coordination with project partners
Your profile
Required Qualifications:
- completed university degree in a geoscientific field (geoinformatics, geography, hydrology, oceanography, meteorology, or similar)
- experience in automated processing and analysis of scientific data in NetCDF format, preferably with Python (Xarray)
- experience with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise solutions
- expertise in coastal research and climate change
- independence and ability to work in a team
- very good written and spoken German and English skills
Desirable Qualifications:
- willingness to familiarize yourself with topics and technologies and potentially pursue further training
- experience in dealing with customers/users
- knowledge of version control, documentation, and sustainable work
- initial experience in scientific publishing
- ability to work in an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary manner
