Postdoctoral Researcher - Automated Correlative Image Analysis for BlueMaterials
Job ID: 922
Location: Hamburg
Join the Cluster of Excellence “BlueMat: Water-Driven Materials” (www.tuhh.de/bluemat) and contribute to one of Europe’s most exciting research initiatives. Collaborate with a dynamic, interdisciplinary team that combines science, sustainability, and technology to create a better future. Help shape the next generation of sustainable materials inspired by nature’s most powerful resource: water.
For the Institute of Metallic Biomaterials, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon for February 1st 2026 we are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher - Automated Correlative Image Analysis for BlueMaterials. In principle, the full time position (39 h/week) is also sharable and fixed-term until 31 January 2029.
The BlueMat project ‘Automated correlative image analysis for BlueMaterials‘, bridges the different techniques developed within the cross-area imaging and gives support to all researchers dealing with image processing challenges. By focusing on automation and enabling correlative imaging in particular, it will streamline image processing efforts and enable the elucidation of specific mechanisms of water-material interactions.
Your tasks
- individual support for researchers across BlueMat in solving image analysis challenges, especially segmentation and quantitative extraction
- development of a correlative image analysis platform enabling automated extraction of sample morphologies (e.g., porosity, tortuosity, connectivity) and fluid flow characteristics from X-ray and electron imaging
- integration of motion analysis in collaboration
- processing of images in preparation for image-based modelling
Your profile
- PhD in physics, materials science, computer science, applied mathematics or a related field
- strong background in image processing and analysis, including deep learning (e.g., CNNs)
- experience with correlative imaging workflows and 2D/3D registration techniques
- strong programming skills in Python and/or C/C++
- ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment
- excellent communication skills in English
- willingness to travel regularly between Rostock and Hamburg (DESY)
We offer you
- an exciting interdisciplinary research environment within the BlueMat Cluster of Excellence
- participation in international conferences, research stays, and collaborative networks
- collaboration with leading experts in imaging, modeling, and materials science
- access to state-of-the-art imaging infrastructure
- flexible working hours and family-friendly policies
- opportunities for professional development
Inclusive excellence drives better science. We actively seek female and international researchers from all walks of life, valuing non-linear careers and diverse perspectives across cultures, disciplines, and identities.
